Miryang City : At least 41 people were reported dead and over 70 injured in a fire incident at a South Korea hospital on Friday.

The blaze started from an emergency room at around 7:30 AM at Sejong Hospital in Miryang city.

Battling fire for approximately two hours, fire fighters evacuated nearly 200 people from the hospital to safety.

According to Yonhap news agency, 93 patients from the nursing home were safely evacuated. Fire chief Choi Man-woo told reporters that the cause of the fire was not yet known.

BBC termed it as one of deadliest fire accident in last decade, suspecting that death toll may increase.

Most patients at the hospital were either of cerebrovascular disease or stroke. Most victims died from smoke inhalation, reports said.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in has called for an emergency meeting to discuss the incident.

Friday's blaze comes just a month after 29 people were killed in Jecheon in a blaze at a public gym.
