New Delhi : H. E. Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has been elected as the new Prime Minister of Pakistan. On the occasion, PM Narendra Modi extended his wishes to his counterpart and said India desires peace and stability in a region free of terror so that both countries can focus on their development challenges.

PM Narendra Modi wrote a tweet to extend his congratulatory wishes. He wrote: "Congratulations to H. E. Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on his election as the Prime Minister of Pakistan. India desires peace and stability in a region free of terror, so that we can focus on our development challenges and ensure the well-being and prosperity of our people."

Shehbaz Sharif was chosen as the new Prime Minister of Pakistan after Imran Khan's removal from the post following a no-confidence motion. Ahead of the vote on Monday, MPs from Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party resigned en masse, boycotting the election of Sharif, the younger brother of three-time Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

In his first address as the Prime Minister, he announced an increase in the salaries, pensions and the minimum wage for labourers.
