New Delhi : Japan started New Year on a very sad note with 7.4 magnitude earthquake that rattled major cities and dismantled lives of many people residing in the regions.

The death toll has now risen to 62, NHK World reported, citing officials from the hard-hit Ishikawa prefecture. Several people have been severly injured in the natural disaster, while hundreds of the people are still believed to be trapped under the debris. Majority of the casualties have been reported in Wajima and Suzu on the Noto Peninsula.

The rescuers, on the other hand, have been battling with poor weather condition and aftershocks of the earthquake. Meanwhile, in a big relief for the people, the authorities have pulled off all tsunami warnings which could have made the situation worse otherwise.

On Monday, the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa's central prefecture experienced seismic jolts, resulting in building collapses and triggering tsunami alerts extending to eastern Russia. The national meteorological office recorded a total of 155 earthquakes in the country on that day.
