Sydney : An Australian man lost his life after he was bitten by a shark on a popular tourist beach, said authorities on Sunday.

Police were called to a Cable Beach in the morning after reports of the attack.

The man was soon pulled out from the water after the attack and was given required medical treatment but he later succumbed to the injuries.

"Police can confirm that tragically the man has died," Western Australia police said in a statement.

It is not common to see shark attacks on the Cable beach, a 22-kilometre (13-mile) stretch of pristine white sand next to the town of Broome.

But for safety precautions, the authorities close down the beach once or twice the year as sharks are spotted in the water.

This was the eighth fatality in the beach till date. There have been at least 22 shark maulings in the same period, according to the Taronga Conservation Society Australia government agency.
