Nepal Plane Crash: Over 50 killed, PM Modi offers condolence; watch video

Kathmandu : At least 50 people have been killed in the tragic accident where a Bangladeshi plane crashed and burned into flames at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu.

US-Bangla Airliner was carrying 67 passengers and crew members on board when it crash landed. Nepal army spokesman Brigadier General Gokul Bhandari said 50 people had died in the crash.

The blackbox from the aircraft has been recovered from the accident site. Over a dozen people, rescued from the accident have been shifted to a nearby hospital in critical situation.

As mentioned in the Kathmandu Post, the accident seems to be a result of technical glitch. “The aircraft was permitted to land from the Southern side of the runway over Koteshwor but it landed from the Northern side,” Director General of Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (Caan) Sanjiv Gautam.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his condolence to the families of those who lost their lives in the tragic incident.

“Deeply anguished by the loss of lives due to the plane crash in Kathmandu. My thoughts are with the families of the deceased and I pray that those injured recover at the earliest,” PM Narendra Modi said in a tweet.
