Omicron: Hospitalizations doubled in a day in Africa

New Delhi : The number of hospitalizations related to coronavirus has doubled in a matter of one day in Africa.

According to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases, 383 people have been admitted to hospital with the disease in the last 24 hours compared with 175 in the preceding period.

Of the 13,147 new cases recorded 64% were in Gauteng, the province that includes Johannesburg and Pretoria, compared with 70% of the 6,381 cases the day earlier, according to a statement from the NICD.

The positivity rate in Africa was 24.9% on Tuesday, down from 26.4% the day earlier.

In the same time period, 27 people lost their lives, taking the total confirmed number of deaths in the country since the pandemic began to 90,002.
