US consulate in Mexico attacked hours before Ivanka Trump's visit

New Delhi : Explosions were seen in the US consulate in Mexico hours before Vice President Mike Pence and first daughter Ivanka Trump were scheduled to visit the place, said authorities.

In the explosion, a wall was damaged while no major injuries have been reported so far. The blast left a 40-centimeter (16-inch) hole in an exterior wall.

"The investigation has been handed over to federal authorities, who will give information on developments in due time," the prosecutor's office for the western state of Jalisco, where Guadalajara is located, said on Twitter.

As per initial investigations, it has been learned that a man threw explosive from the outside and ran away. The CCTV camera has captured the man, but he managed to evade authorities despite heavy security presence in the building.

In a video posted online in recent days, purportedly by the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, the powerful drug trafficking organization had threatened to attack the consulate.

The cartel, one of the largest and most violent in Mexico, is a top target for US anti-drug operations.
