US welcomes India's move to ban Chinese applications

Washington : US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday welcomed India's decision to ban Chinese applications which were allegedly threatening India's national security amid data breach threats.

"We welcome India's ban on some of the Chinese applications which were serving as an appendage of the CCP's (Chinese Communist Party) surveillance State," Pompeo told reporters on Wednesday.

"India's clean app approach will boost India's sovereignty. It will also boost India's integrity and national security," he said.

On Monday, India announced ban on 59 Chinese applications, including TikTok and UC browser, for engaging in "activities which are prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order".

The ban on application comes two weeks after a violent clash between Indian and Chinese soldiers. 20 Indian jawans were martyred in the deadly clash.

The list of apps that have been banned by India also include Helo, Likee, Cam Scanner, Vigo Video, Mi Video Call - Xiaomi, Clash of Kings as well as e-commerce platforms Club Factory and Shein.
