India's fuel demand dips 45.8 per cent as compared to last year

New Delhi : With ongoing lockdowns due to coronavirus, the demand of fuel by India has dipped by 45.8 per cent from a year earlier.

Consumption of fuel, a proxy for oil demand, totalled 9.93 million tonnes - its lowest since 2007, government data showed on Saturday.

The sale of refined fuel also declined to 50 per cent in the first two weeks of April when India was in the initial phase of its lockdown.

Last week, the government extended lockdown till May 17 with relaxations in areas under low risk of containment.

However, travel by air, rail and metro and inter-state movement of people by road was still banned.
