JNU administration partially rolls back fees hike amid students' protest

Protest at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium

New Delhi : In a major relief to Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students, the administration has rolled back fees hike and promised assistance for economically weaker section.

"The JNU Executive Committee announces major roll-back in the hostel fee and other stipulations. Also proposes a scheme for economic assistance to the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) students," Education Secretary R Subrahmanyam in the Minsitry of Human resource Development, said in a tweet.

The students had been carrying a massive protest outside the University campus after a circular mentioned a fee hike of over 400% in some parts of the sections.

On Monday, the cops and the students had ran into a scuffle over the issue. The students were raising slogans like 'Delhi Police Go Back' and 'Vice Chancellor a thief' while demanding a rollback of the draft hostel manual, which they claimed has provisions for fee hike, dress code and curfew timings.
