Centre declares June 25 as ’Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ to mark 1975 Emergency
New Delhi : Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government has announced June 25 as "Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas". In a gazette notification on Friday, the Ministry of Home Affairs noted that the Emergency was declared on June 25, 1975, by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
One June 25, 1975, then Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi had announced 21-month state of national emergency.
The ministry's notification mentioned that the Centre has decided to commemorate June 25 each year as 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas' to "honor all those who suffered and resisted the severe misuse of power during the Emergency period, and to reaffirm the commitment of the people of India to never support such abuses of power in the future."
Amit Shah announces news on Twitter
Union Home Minister Amit Shah shared the notification on X and said, "This day will commemorate the massive contributions of all those who endured the inhuman pains of the 1975 Emergency."
In his tweet he also attacked the then ruling Congress party and said that the observance of 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas' will help keep the eternal flame of individual freedom and the defence of our democracy alive in every Indian, "thus preventing dictatorial forces like the Congress from repeating those horrors."
