Killing over cow protection not acceptable in India, says Prime Minister Narendra Modi

Ahmedabad : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday broke his silence over recent incidents of cow protection-related lynchings and violence, saying that such acts will not be tolerated and 'killing in the name of cow worship is not acceptable'.

"As a society, there is no place for violence," he said in a speech at the Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad.

"Killing people in the name of 'gau bhakti' (cow worship) is not acceptable," he said. "This is not something Mahatma Gandhi would approve."

"No person in our country has a right to take law in his hands," he added.

While he blasted so called 'Cow Bhakts', he also assured that his government will look after the steps that should be taken to ensure safety of cows in the nation.
