Mumbai sees record-breaking rainfall, marks earliest monsoon in 75 years
Mumbai : Mumbai experienced a historic weather event on Monday, with the city recording its highest rainfall in 107 years on the very first day of the monsoon season. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the southwest monsoon arrived in Mumbai on May 26, a full 16 days earlier than the usual onset date of June 11. This makes it the earliest monsoon arrival in the city in 75 years.
An official IMD statement confirmed: “Southwest Monsoon has advanced to Mumbai today, 26th May 2025, against the normal date of advancement, 11th June. This marks the earliest monsoon advancement over Mumbai during the period 2001–2025.”
Along with the early arrival, the city was hit by intense rainfall that led to waterlogging and disruption in several areas. Data from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) shows that parts of South Mumbai received more than 200 mm of rain between midnight and 11 am on Monday.
The Colaba weather observatory recorded a staggering 295 mm of rain, surpassing the previous record of 279.4 mm set in May 1918.
The early monsoon and extreme rainfall have prompted authorities to stay on high alert as the city braces for more wet days ahead.
