Project Namami Gange is going nowhere near its target

New Delhi : Prime Minister’s pet project Namami Gange is looking to be finished within the deadline. PM Modi had set a deadline of 2018 to clean the holy Ganga river and announced $3 billion.

The project is badly affected due to large stretches contaminated by toxic waste and sewage. The delay in work has forced the PM to intervene in the matter.

Much of the money allocated to the project remains unspent.

According to officials, a 2018 deadline to clean the river is impossible. "If we want to meet the 2018 deadline, we should have commissioned plants to treat half the sewage already," he said.

Over three-quarters of the sewage generated in the towns and cities of India's crowded northern plains flows untreated into Ganga.

 

State administrations have struggled to find land for new treatment plants, while complex tendering processes have put bidders off pitching for new clean-up projects.
