New Delhi : Javelin Olympics champion Neeraj Chopra on Sunday ended India's 19 year long wait to win a medal at the World Athletics Championships; he managed a silver medal.

This is India's second medal at the event after 2003 when Anju Bobby George had clinched a bronze medal in long jump.

Neeraj Chopra threw javelin to 88.13m in the final at the Hayward Field and missed the gold medal from Anderson Peters’ 90.54m while Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Jakub Vadlejch won the bronze with 88.09m.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi showered praise on Neeraj Chopra for his outstanding efforts at the championship. PM Modi wrote on Twitter: "A great accomplishment by one of our most distinguished athletes! Congratulations to @Neeraj_chopra1 on winning a historic Silver medal at the #WorldChampionships."



Another Indian javelin thrower - Rohit Yadav - finished 10th with a best attempt of 78.72m, which came in his third attempt. His two earlier attempts measured 77.96m and 78.05m. Neeraj Chopra will now be seen in action  in Commonwealth Games Birmingham.
