New Delhi : Queen Elizabeth II, Britain's longest-serving monarch, passed away on Thursday. She was 96-year-old. The official announcement has been made by the Royal Family.

"The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow," the Royal Family tweeted on Thursday.

The Queen was born on April 21, 1926 at 17 Bruton Street in Mayfair, London. She was the first child of The Duke and Duchess of York – who later became King George VI – and Queen Elizabeth.

She was ill from past couple of days and the doctors had suggested medical supervision for her.

United Kingdom's new Prime Minister Liz Truss said that we are all devastated by the news. The demise of the queen is a huge shock for the nation and the world.
