Whatsapp added to the list of banned social media channels in China

Beijing : Instant messaging app Whatsapp, owned by Facebook, has been blocked in major parts of the China, said a media report.

The Open Observatory of Network Interference (OONI), a global observation network for detecting censorship, surveillance and traffic manipulation, suggested on Monday night that Chinese internet service providers started blocking access to WhatsApp on September 23, reports CNN. 

Users from China on Twitter also mentioned that they are unable to access Whatsapp on their devices since September 19.

An official statement from Whatsapp on the development is awaited. Currently, in china the banned social networks include Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Google.
