Delhi : Mahindra has been putting the 5-door Thar through testing for a while. It was planned to debut in 2023. However, a recent official declaration states that the 5-door Thar's introduction would not happen this year. During the company's most recent press conference for Q4 and FY23 earnings, information on the debut of 5-door Thar was disclosed. Rajesh Jejurikar, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.'s Executive Director (Auto & Farm Sectors), has announced that the 5-door Thar won't be introduced in 2023. Mahindra won't be releasing any new products this year, he added.

Is a long wait time to blame?

5-door Thar has been seen several times in a stage of close to production. The first test mule was discovered more over a year ago. Given these elements, Mahindra's decision to postpone the debut of the Thar 5-door vehicle until 2024 is a little surprise. Additionally, the competing 5-door Jimny appears to be gaining ground. On June 7th, it is planned to launch.

Despite the likelihood of several contributing causes, one that is already well-known is the lengthy waitlist for Mahindra vehicles. The current longest waiting period for Scorpio N is up to 18 months. A 13-month waiting period is available for the XUV700. The waiting period for Thar is up to 17 months. The 1.5-liter 2WD diesel model has the longest wait time.

Massive reservations and anticipated problems in the supply chain may have led to the decision to postpone the debut of the 5-door Thar until next year. At least through 2023, Mahindra could want to concentrate more on clearing current deliveries. With this choice, Jimny will benefit because it won't have any direct competitors when it launches. Later this year, a 5-door Gurkha is anticipated to be released.

5-door Thar specifications and characteristics

The basis for the 5-door Thar, which has a lot of similarities with the 3-door model in terms of appearance and feel, is the Scorpio N. With the 5-door Thar, users may anticipate more comfortable trips and a family atmosphere. The SUV will be offered in 2WD and 4WD configurations.

Inside, the 5-door Thar is anticipated to have amenities including automatic temperature control, an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and cruise control. Up to six airbags, ESP with roll-over mitigation, hill hold and hill descent control, ABS with EBD and braking aid, and a rear parking camera are all included in the safety features.

The 5-door Thar will have the same engine options as the current Thar. The engines might be adjusted to reach a higher level of tune, though. The 2.2-liter diesel engine produces 300 Nm of maximum torque and 130 PS of maximum power in its current configuration. Both a 6-speed manual and 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox are available. The 2.0-liter petrol engine generates 150 PS. The 6-speed manual's torque output is 300 Nm, while the automatic's is 320 Nm.
