Delhi : New EV and ICE designs were on display in Tata's pavilion at the Auto Expo 2023, which attracted a lot of attention. The automaker revealed two new engines at the event, a 1.2-liter and a 1.5-liter turbocharged direct injection (TGDi) engine. While we wait for these powerhouses to go into production, let's compare how these new engines perform on paper against Tata's current 1.2-liter port-injection turbocharged petrol engine:

  • The modern Tata turbo petrol engine is available in two power tunes: 110PS and 120PS. The Altroz i-turbo uses the weaker turbo unit, whereas the Nexon and the future Altroz Racer use the stronger turbo unit, which is rated at 120PS.
  • In addition to having a torque advantage of up to 85Nm over the current turbo-petrol engine, the 1.2-liter TGDi boasts a power advantage of up to 15PS!
  • The larger 1.5-liter gasoline engine, in contrast, produces 170PS as much power as the 2.0-liter diesel engine found in the Harrier and Safari, but it produces 70Nm less torque.
  • Tata's new TGDi engines are expected to perform better than the previous turbo-petrol engines in the transmission system, which is essential to power delivery and significantly affects performance.
  • The only automatic transmission available for the contemporary turbo-petrol engine is an automated manual transmission (AMT). The option of a DCT is anticipated for the new engines in the meantime.

Flex-fuel Compliant New TGDi Engines

The new TGDi engines are superior to the 1.2-liter turbo because they comply with phase II BS6 regulations and can run on E20 gasoline (20 per cent ethanol blended with petrol).

What vehicles will use the new TGDi engines?

The Tata Curvv will be the first model to use the new 1.2-liter TGDi petrol engine before other models like the Altroz and Nexon will get it. On the other hand, Tata's two most prominent SUVs, the Harrier and Safari, will offer the larger 1.5-liter TGDi. Beginning in 2024, we anticipate them to drive Tata's passenger cars.
