New Delhi : Bharat Biotech on Thursday reduced prices of its coronavirus vaccine – Covaxin – for states from Rs 600 per vial to Rs 400. The company has not changed the price of vaccine for private markets, where it will be sold for Rs 1200 per dose.

The new prices for states have been announced just one day after Serum Institute reduced price of their vaccine – Covishield.

On price reduction of Covaxin, Bharat Biotech said, "Recognising the enormous challenges to the public health care system, we have made Covaxin available to state governments at Rs 400 per dose".

"We wish to be transparent in our approach to pricing which was determined by internally funded product development, several operationally-intensive BSL-3 manufacturing facilities, and clinical trial," it added.

On April 25, Bharat Biotech had announced that Covaxin will be sold to states for Rs 600 and to private markets for Rs 1200 per dose.

Covaxin is among the two vaccines available to Indian citizens to date. Another vaccine is Covishield, manufactured by the Pune-based Serum Institute of India.
