100 IIT Bombay students stage protest against new hostel rules
Mumbai : Nearly 100 IIT Bombay students staged protest on Friday against the new hostel rules about which they were informed on January 29. The students were seen standing with the banner IIT-Bombay for justice.
For the protest, the students tied a piece of cloth on their mouth to symbolize that the institute is against their freedom of speech.
As we had reported earlier that the dean of the college had issued fresh rules for the students of hostels that they must not indulge in anti-social, anti-national and undesirable activities. The students have raised demands to revise the rules as previous.
The students submitted a letter to the dean, quoting several rulings from the court, which said it is the right of the citizens to protest against something they do not want to be imposed.
In the letter, students wrote, "This authoritarian mindset by the administration to control student activities goes against the ideals of equality, liberty and justice that all progressive spaces like a premier institute of eminence must uphold."
They also claimed that the students have always been on the forefront whenever it came to democratic churning India has experienced till date.
