Famous Gazhal singer Pankaj Udhas dies at 72

New Delhi : Legendary ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas passed away in Mumbai on Monday, February 26th, 2024, after battling a long illness. He was 72 years old.

His daughter, Nayab, confirmed the news. Udhas was also known for his contributions as a playback singer in Hindi films like "Naam," "Saajan," and "Mohra."

"With a very heavy heart, we are saddened to inform you of the sad demise of Padmashri Pankaj Udhas on 26th February 2024 due to a prolonged illness," Nayab wrote in an Instagram post.

The last rites will be held on Tuesday.

Pankaj Udhas' voice and lyrics made a mark with audiences worldwide, leaving a legacy of countless albums and sold-out concerts. His numerous contributions to music were richly recognized, including his prestigious Padma Shri award, one of India's highest civilian honors, bestowed upon him in 2006.

Singer Sonu Nigam expressed his grief on Instagram, stating that Pankaj Udhas was "one of the most important parts of my childhood." He shared a picture of Udhas and wrote, "I will miss you forever. My heart cries knowing that you are no more. Thank you for being there. Om Shanti."
