Andhra Pradesh : There is good news coming up from Andhra Pradesh. A team of doctors has successfully performed a rare and complex heart surgery on an 18-day-old baby at Andhra Hospitals. The statement was confirmed by Dr PV Rama Rao, head of Children’s Services. 

During the press meet, Dr Rama Rao said that the baby was underweight suffering with complex heart disease ‘Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Drainage’ (TAPVD) and was admitted to the hospital. In this rare disease, the blood vessels that go to the heart were placed in abnormal position. He said this was one of the rare complex varieties of TAPVD.

Doctors decided to take the risk and on May 3, the operation was performed on the baby successfully. The 30-day-old baby was responding well and ready for discharge, he explained

Dr Rama Rao said that they had performed about 27 TAPVD complex cardiac surgeries so far. He said the team effort of specialised doctors in the neonatology department of Andhra Hospital was behind the success, he added.

According to Dr Vikram, close to 7,000 children take birth every year with complex heart diseases and about 200 children undergo surgeries. There are many reasons behind the heart disease in newborn’ just because of infections in pregnant women, malnutrition, diabetics, smoking and alcohol consumption.

Dr Dilip said that this was the hospital is one-stop destination where all types of neonatal heart surgeries are conducted, with back up support of tertiary level 3 neonatal intensive care unit, he added.
