New Delhi : Aam Aadmi Party leader Atishi Marlena visited Raj Niwas on Sunday and submitted her resignation from the post of Delhi Chief Minister to LG VK Saxena after her party faced humiliating defeat against Bharatiya Janata Party in the recently concluded Delhi Elections 2025. LG VK Saxena has asked her to retain the post till the formation on new government.
BJP is likely to stake claim for the power next week when Prime Minister Narendra Modi will return from his foreign visit.
"Hon’ble Lt Governor, Shri VK Saxena today received the resignation of Hon’ble CM, Ms Atishi. He asked her to continue in her position till the formation of the new government," Raj Niwas, Delhi posted from its official X handle.
LG VK Saxena has formally dissolved the Delhi Assembly on Saturday after poll results were out.
A notification by the assembly secretariat issued a day before read, "In exercise of the power conferred upon me by sub-section (2)(b) of section 6 of the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi Act, 1991, I, Vinai Kumar Saxena, Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, hereby dissolve the Seventh Legislative Assembly of the National Capital Territory of Delhi with effect from February 8, 2025."
Bharatiya Janata Party has returned to power in Delhi after a long wait of 27 years by winning 48 seats of the 70 assembly seats. Aam Aadmi Party could manage only 22 seats and Congress even failed to win a single seat.
Atishi Marlena had taken oath as Chief Minister of Delhi in September last year after AAP convenor and her predecessor Arvind Kejriwal resigned from the post amid corruption allegations against him.
