Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's bail in focus; Supreme Court verdict today
New Delhi : The Supreme Court will be hearing the bail plea of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal challenging his arrest in the CBI case linked to the capital's now-scrapped liquor policy. A bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan will be hearing the bail plea.
It must be noted that CM Arvind Kejriwal was granted bail by the Supreme Court in the Enforcement Directorate case against him, but he had to remain in jail due to the CBI case. If the decision on his bail comes in his favour, Arvind Kejriwal will step out of jail after five months.
The CBI arrested Mr Kejriwal on June 26. The Delhi High Court on August 5 upheld his arrest as legal and said the CBI was able to establish that the AAP leader could influence witnesses.
Meanwhile, senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi called CM Arvind Kejriwal's arrest as 'insurance arrest'. He said, "CBI arrested CM after two years despite three court orders in his favour. This is an insurance arrest so that he can be kept in jail."
Mr Singhvi said the Supreme Court needs to address three questions -- is there a flight risk? will he tamper with evidence? will he influence witnesses?
