Bihar residents to get 125 units of electricity free

Patna : In a major move, the Bihar government will now provide 125 units of electricity free of cost to every household in the state. Consumers will only be billed for usage beyond this limit. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced the initiative through a post on his social media handle, X. A special cabinet meeting has also been convened on Friday to approve the proposal, following which the scheme will be implemented across the state.
In his post, the Chief Minister stated:
“From the very beginning, we have ensured electricity at affordable rates for all. Now, from August 1, 2025 — applicable from the July billing cycle — all domestic consumers in Bihar will receive 125 units of electricity free of charge. This move will benefit approximately 1.67 crore families across the state.”
He further mentioned that within the next three years, rooftop solar panels or solar plants at nearby public sites will be installed for all domestic consumers with their consent, as part of a broader solar energy transition.
For extremely poor families under the Kutir Jyoti Yojana, the government will bear the full cost of solar panel installation, while it will also extend support to other consumers as needed. As a result, households will incur no cost for electricity consumption up to 125 units.
The Chief Minister also projected that Bihar could generate up to 10,000 MW of solar power over the next three years.
This marks the first time in Bihar’s history that such a subsidy is being extended to the general public. Following the Chief Minister’s announcement, the Energy Department has started preparations. Discussions are underway regarding the tariff to be applied beyond the 125-unit threshold. All details of the scheme will be placed before the Cabinet for approval, after which the scheme will be rolled out across the state.
