New Delhi : Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday announced an extension in ongoing coronavirus lockdown till May 24 to prevent further spread of COVID-19 infection.

"We are extending the lockdown for one more week. Instead of tomorrow (May 17), lockdown is extended till next Monday (May 24), 5 am in Delhi," said Arvind Kejriwal.

The lockdown was first implemented on April 20 and since then it has been extended fourth time due to large number of new daily coronavirus cases in the national capital.

The COVID-19 situation has been improving in Delhi with the number of cases and positivity rate going down steadily in the past few days. The chief minister said the lockdown is being extended as the gains made so far in combating the coronavirus cannot be lost due to relaxations now.

On Sunday, Delhi reported around 6000 new cases which is good improvement from the peak under which more than 20,000 cases were coming daily. The positivity rate dipped to 11.32 percent.

This is the second consecutive day when Delhi has recorded less than 10,000 cases, However, lesser number of coronavirus cases can also be credited to fewer testing. 56,811 people were tested on May 14.
