Dalit man beaten to death for attending Garba in Gujarat

Anand : A 21-year-old Dalit man was beaten to death for allegedly attending a Garba event in Anand district of Gujarat, the police said.

The incident took place at around 4 AM when an alleged attacker indulged in a fight with Jayesh Solanki and his friends for passing a disrespectful comment over the caste of the victim.

According to the police complaint, the attacker said, Dalits "do not have the right to watch garba and made casteist remarks," an officer at the Bhadran police station said, adding that he then called other people to join him.

The attackers then thrashed the Dalit men and slammed Jayesh's head against the wall. The injured man was later taken to the hospital, where he was declared dead by the doctors.

The police officer termed it as the case of heat of the moment and not a pre-planned murder.

"Jayesh was killed in the heat of the moment, as there was no rivalry between him and the accused. We are investigating the case from all angles. The accused will be arrested soon,"  senior police officer said.
