New Delhi : Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been granted bail by a session court in Surat till April 13 in a criminal defamation case in connection with his remark on Modi surname. The court has suspended his 2-year jail term till the disposal of his appeal. However, the court refused to grant an interim stay on his conviction in the case. 

After getting the bail from the Session court, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi wrote on Twitter – "My flight is to save the democracy and truth is my weapon."



In his tweet, Rahul Gandhi attacked the centre with term "mitrakaal", claiming that it has been working only to benefit a crony of capitalist friends.

On Monday, Rahul Gandhi had filed an appeal before a session courts in Gujarat Surat city challenging his 2 year conviction in the criminal defamation case. He had also seek the stay in the conviction, which court said that an order cannot be passed without hearing the other side.

This clearly means that Rahul Gandhi’s Lok Sabha membership will remain suspended and he will have to vacate the government allotted house on the prescribed date.

In support of his appeal, Rahul Gandhi was accompanied by his sister Priyanka Gandhi in Surat, other Congress leaders who accompanied him included Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu.

Meanwhile, BJP has also create their reaction over the incident and said that the opposition is trying to put an undue pressure on the judiciary system.



BJP leader Kiren Rijiju claimed that he is wondering why the whole Congress party is trying to gherao the court in a matter of a defamation case.

Congress responded to his question and said that if there is a court case, then the whole family join and go to the court. Here it is about the entire party and Rahul Gandhi is fighting for the country. So the whole party is joining him in the court sessions.

Kharge said that this is the clear show of how Congress party is united and shows strength and support for Gandhi who is fighting for the nation.
