New Delhi : NDA has announced its candidate for the upcoming Presidential polls; BJP's parliamentary board nominated Jharkhand governor Droupadi Murmu for the post. She will be standing against Opposition's Yashwant Sinha in the elections.

Late on Tuesday evening, BJP parliamentary board zeroed down on her name. If she manages to win in the election then she will become the first tribal woman to hold the position of a President in India.

BJP's parliamentary board include PM Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, Roads and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and BJP general secretary (organisation) B L Santhosh.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted her name as the candidate for the President of India and said he is confident she will be a great President of our nation.

Who is Droupadi Mrumu?

Born on June 20, 1958, Droupadi Murmu is an Indian politician associated with Bharatiya Janata Party. She previously served as the ninth Governor of Jharkhand from 2015 to 2021. She is from the state of Odisha. She is the first governor of Jharkhand to complete the five year term.

The leader belongs to Baidaposi village of Mayurbhanj district in Odisha.

Murmu was elected as the councillor of Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat in 1997. She also served as the vice-president of Bharathiya Janata Party's Scheduled Tribes Morcha.

During the Bharatiya Janata Party and Biju Janata Dal coalition government in Odisha, She was the Minister of State with independent charge for Commerce and Transport from March 6, 2000 to August 6, 2002 and Fisheries and Animal Resources Development from August 6, 2002 to May 16, 2004.
