New Delhi : What could be worse that losing life of a rape victim? Cremating her body without taking the consent of her family and even not in their presence; the nightmare turned real in case of the poor Hathras rape victim, whose body was allegedly cremated by the UP Police officials without the permission of the family.

The family has alleged that the UP Police officials forcibly took the woman’s body away in the middle of the night for final rites.

"The police have forcibly taken the dead body, and my father along with them for cremation. When my father reached Hathras, he was immediately taken (to the crematorium) by the police," the woman’s brother told news agency PTI.

The body of the woman reached her village around midnight and the cremation was done by 3 am on Wednesday.

The villagers claimed that they wanted to take the body of the woman to her house, but administration pressed for cremation at the earliest.

The police, meanwhile, said that the cremation of the woman was carried out by the family members. Superintendent of Police (SP) Vikrant Veer denied any “urgency” by police in cremation despite the fact that cremation usually do not take place in night.

He has claimed that the cremation has been done as per rituals and the situation in the village is calm, but heavy police has been deployed as a precautionary measure.

The woman was brutally raped by four men in Hathras and she eventually died in Delhi yesterday. She was in a critical condition and on ventilator support.

The four rape accused have been arrested and are in police custody.
