New Delhi : The government has taken measures to restrict the usage of 14 mobile messenger applications that were being exploited by terrorists as communication platforms to transmit information in Jammu and Kashmir

Among the applications blocked by the government are Crypviser, Enigma, Safeswiss, Wickrme, Mediafire, Briar, BChat, Nandbox, Conion, IMO, Element, Second line, Zangi, and Threema. These applications were identified as tools used by terrorists in Kashmir to communicate with their supporters and on-ground workers (OGW).

The decision by the government has been taken to ensure national security, which was allegedly been compromised with the use of these mobile applications.

In previous instances, the Indian government took action by banning several Chinese apps, citing concerns regarding their impact on "the sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of the state and public order."

In total, approximately 250 Chinese apps have been banned over the past few years. Since June 2020, over 200 Chinese apps, including popular ones like TikTok, Shareit, WeChat, Helo, Likee, UC News, Bigo Live, UC Browser, Xender, Camscanner, as well as popular mobile games such as PUBG Mobile and Garena Free Fire, have been subject to such bans.
