India logs less than 1 lakh new cases for the second day

New Delhi : Coronavirus cases continued to stay below the 1 lakh mark for the second consecutive day. On Wednesday, 92,596 new coronavirus cases were registered, slightly above Tuesday. 2219 people lost their lives due to coronavirus in the last 24 hours, as per Union Health Ministry data. 

With this, the total number of coronavirus cases crossed 2,90,89,069, while the cumulative death toll stood at 3,53,528. Meanwhile, 1,62,664 people were discharged on Tuesday, taking the toll of total recoveries to 2,75,04,126. Currently, India has 12,31,415 active cases.

The positivity rate stood at 4.67 percent as the country continued to report positivity rate below 10 percent for 16 consecutive days.



With number of new cases coming down, several states and Union Territories have started the unlock process. Despite unlock measures in place, the government has urged people to avoid coming out of their homes for less important works.

Addressing the pandemic situation at hand, Health Ministry Joint Secretary Lav Agarwal said almost 79 percent decline in daily new COVID-19 cases has been noted since the peak on May 7.
