Bengaluru : This surplus amount of harvest in onion and tomato has left farmers scratching their heads as the retail price of onions has been drop to as low as ₹2 per kg in Karnataka. The Kolar district fruit and vegetable growers struggle committee has demanded the government to announce a minimum support price for onion tomato growers to safeguard the interest of farmers.

Transportation cost higher than sale

According to reports, the price of per kg sale of onion is settled around rupees ₹2 per kg. Meanwhile, the farmers have claimed that the transportation cost is higher than the retail price of the onion itself. The farmers who are bringing their produce from a far area, hoping that they will get a good price, are left disappointed.

A farmer in Bengaluru came to sell 205 kgs of his onions on November 22. He got to know that the price of the onions has dropped to ₹2 per kg and hence he got total of ₹410. He had to pay ₹401 as unloading charges. Remaining ₹8 were his actual profit from sale of 205 kgs of onion. The photo image of his bill had gone viral on social media.

The plight of tomato Grover’s is no different as they are selling ₹5 to ₹6 per kg in South Karnataka.
