Maharashtra farmers' protest ends as government accepts their demands

Mumbai : After six days of massive protest by farmers in Maharashtra, the government finally agreed to accept their demands, resulting in a positive end to the agitation.

The demands by farmers include right to forest land and waiver of loans.

In a major victory for the farmers, Maharashtra Revenue Minister Chandrakant Patil said "all demands" are being accepted.

"We held very cordial discussions and have conceded most of the demands of the tribals, labourers and farmers who took part in the march," Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced here.

The government asked farmers to back home as they will now work on ensuring the implementation in time-bound manner.

Nearly 35000 farmers, including men, women and youth had been sitting in Azad Maidan from last six days. Now, after the demands have been accepted they have started vacating the place.

The massive farmers' march to Mumbai was a "stunning example of people's power", Gandhi said on Twitter.
