Uber driver attempts young woman abduction in car, fails, held in Delhi

New Delhi : In yet another incident questioning safety of women in the national capital, an Uber driver allegedly tried to abduct a young woman, who escaped by jumping off the moving car. The accused has been held by the cops.

The app-based cab service Uber said that they have initiated action against the driver and are fully cooperating with police in the investigation of the matter.

On March 9, the young woman booked herself a cab from her office in Kundli (Haryana) to her residence in Rohini Sector 3. When the cab arrived, it was carrying a white number plate instead of yellow commercial number plate, said police.

The girl grew suspicion as the face of driver was also not matching with the one provided by the app. As the driver tried to take a different route as mentioned in the app, the girl resisted and the man threatened her with centrally locking the car doors.

Luckily, the girl managed to jump off the moving car from window at a traffic signal.

During the investigation, the car was traced to Janti Kalan village in Sonipat, Haryana. The cops learned that the uber driver had given his car to one of his friend who tried to abduct the woman.

The investigators are examining the other driver's culpability and have also sent a questionnaire to the cab aggregator firm in connection with the case. A reply is awaited, they said.

Uber in its initial action has removed the driver who allowed another man to drive his vehicle.

"We immediately removed the driver partner's access to the app and will take strict action against him for letting an unregistered driver without a licence access his account and take trips via the app," the spokesperson said.
