No special facilities for P Chidambaram in Tihar Jail: Officials

New Delhi : Tihar jail officials have said that there will be no special facilities for former Union Minister P Chidambaram in the prison except a western toilet, separate cell and some medicines as directed by the court.

Like other inmates, P Chidambaram will be allowed to access prison library and watch television for a specified timing.

He was given a mandatory medical check-up before he was lodged in Jail No. 7, where his son Karti Chidambaram was also lodged last year for his involvement in the same case.

He had a light dinner and his medicines on his first night in jail, Hindustan Times quoted sources.

As per report, his cell was prepared in advance anticipating that the Congress leader might turn up in view of the ongoing court cases against him, they said.

A prison official said food is usually served to the inmates between 7 and 8 pm but it is kept aside for those who arrive late due to court procedures.

The usual dinner menu is rotis, dal, sabji and rice.

Chidambaram will be lodged in the cell from 9 pm to 6 am. Breakfast will be served between 7 am and 8 am, the official added.

Chidambaram, who was also the home minister during UPA 2, was sent to 14-day judicial custody on Thursday in the INX Media corruption case.
