Delhi : Parliament on Tuesday cleared the Delhi Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2022 that allows merging of three municipal corporations into a single entity in the capital.

This comes a month after the State Election Commission (SEC) deferred the municipal elections after receiving a communication from the Centre. Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal had then alleged that the elections have been delayed because BJP knows that they will lose the elections miserably.

Currently, BJP is leading all three Delhi civic bodies.

The bill was passed in Lok Sabha last week and now it has been cleared in Rajya Sabha with a voice note.

The bill merges the three Delhi Civic Bodies into one entity and reduces the total council seats to 250 from current 272.

It must be noted that earlier the MCD was single body and later it was trifurcated by then Shiela Dikshit government claiming it will help in better management and work.
