Petrol, diesel prices hiked for 10th consecutive day

New Delhi : Petrol and diesel prices rose for the tenth consecutive day to touch a record high. The fuel companies hiked petrol prices by 16 paise and diesel by 19 paise per litre on Tuesday.

The latest petrol prices in the metro cities are as follows:

Delhi - Rs 79.31

Mumbai - Rs 86.72

Chennai - Rs 82.41

Kolkata - 82.22

The latest diesel prices in the metro cities are as follows:

Delhi - Rs 71.34/litre

Mumbai - Rs 75.74/litre

Chennai - Rs 75.39/litre

Kolkata - Rs 74.19/litre

The hike in petrol and diesel prices is a result of spike in the prices of global crude oil prices and record fall of Indian Rupee value against Dollar.

Since August 16, petrol prices have risen by over Rs 2 per litre while diesel prices have been hiked by Rs 2.61 per litre.

Opposition demands

To control the hike in prices of the fuel, Congress had been demanding to bring the petrol and diesel under the ambit of goods and services tax (GST). “Relentless rise in prices of petrol and diesel is not inevitable. Because, the price is built up by excessive taxes on petrol and diesel. If taxes are cut, prices will decline significantly,” Congress leader and former finance minister P. Chidambaram said.
