Lucknow : In a bid to increase the medical infrastructure of Uttar Pradesh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday inaugurated nine medical colleges. He took part in the ceremony virtually from Siddharthnagar. 

The medical colleges will be built at a cost of Rs 2,329 crore; they will be located in Siddharthnagar, Etah, Hardoi, Pratapgarh, Fatehpur, Deoria, Ghazipur, Mirzapur and Jaunpur districts.

Eight colleges will be constructed under the Centrally sponsored scheme for establishment of new medical colleges attached with district or referral hospitals, the one at Jaunpur has been made functional by the State government through its own resources.

The aim behind the move is to ensure better health professionals and infrastructure in areas which have potential to grow and still under backward category.

Under three phases of the scheme, 157 new medical colleges have been approved across the nation, out of which 63 medical colleges are already functional.
