New Delhi : Sudan's military has seized power on Monday, dissolving the transitional government hours after troops arrested acting Prime Minister Hamdok and other officials. Soon after the coup, thousands of people were seen hitting the street to protest against it.

The takeover comes more than two years after protesters forced the ouster of longtime autocrat Omar al-Bashir and just weeks before the military was expected to hand the leadership of the council that runs the country over to civilians.

Prime Minister Hamdok and other officials were arrested in the morning and soon after the information was released, people came on street to protest against the military coup. In the videos available online, people can be seen blocking roads and burning tires. Meanwhile, army can be seen using tear gas shells to disperse the people.

As plumes of smoke filled the air, protesters could be heard chanting, “The people are stronger, stronger” and “Retreat is not an option!” Videos on social media showed large crowds crossing bridges over the Nile to the center of the capital.

According to a news report by the Hindu, around 12 protesters have been injured in the incidents.

In the afternoon, the head of the military, Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan, announced on national TV that he was dissolving the government and the Sovereign Council, a joint military and civilian body created four months after al-Bashir’s ouster to run the country.
