New Delhi : Onam festival is here! Hon'ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi and HE President Droupadi Murmu extended their greetings to the nation. The leaders shared messages, urging people to spread the sparkle of the harvest festival of Kerala and wished for prosperity.

PM Modi tweeted on X(formerly Twitter), "Onam greetings to everyone! May your lives be showered with good health, unparalleled joy and immense prosperity. Over the last many years, Onam has become a global festival and it beautifully showcases the vibrant culture of Kerala."

President Murmu greeted the citizens and said, "On this auspicious occasion we express our gratitude to Mother nature for the countless bounties. May this harvest festival usher in prosperity and the spirit of harmony among all."

The festivities, commenced on August 20th, are marked by grandeur and last for a span of ten days. This year, Kerala's chosen theme for the celebration is 'Onam, Oru Eenam' (Onam, the symphony of harmony). Visuals portray Thiruvananthapuram adorned with lights, and people gathering in vibrant attire, contributing to the joyous ambiance.

Rooted in popular mythology, the festival's origins are tied to a well-known tale. Legend has it that the southern state was once under the rule of 'Mahabali,' a benevolent Asura (demon) king. Under his leadership, equality prevailed, and deceit and thievery were non-existent.

Driven by jealousy, the deities conspired to overthrow him, aided by Lord Vishnu. According to the myth, following his removal from power, Mahabali was granted the opportunity to resurface on Thiruvonam day annually, coinciding with the festival's tenth day. As a result, the occasion of Onam commemorates the king's annual return.
