Punjab : The Congress party put up a spectacular show in the local body polls in Punjab as the party won six of seven seats by afternoon, counting is still underway. It won massively in Moga, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, Abohar, Pathankot, and Bathinda.

Interestingly, Bhatinda win is touted to be a big victory as Congress will make a return after 53 years.

Bhatinda Lok Sabha constituency is represented by Harsimrat Badal of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD); Congress MLA and state finance minister, Manpreet Singh Badal, represents the Bathinda urban assembly seat. He is also a cousin of SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal, making the municipal election a prestige battle this time.

The local body polls results can be seen as major setback for BJP on the backdrop of ongoing farmers protest in the nation.

The elections were held amid thousands of farmers from the state, along with many of those from Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, camping around Delhi since November in protest against the central laws. Over 150 protesters have died till now due to various reasons, including harsh weather and by suicide.
