New Delhi : Congress president Rahul Gandhi has shared his first reaction to the Surat Court’s verdict in Modi surname case against him. He quoted Mahatma Gandhi in his first reaction after he was sentenced to 2 years of imprisonment in the defamation case.

"My religion is based on truth and non-violence. Truth is my God, non-violence the means to get it- Mahatma Gandhi," Rahul tweeted in Hindi after the verdict.

Earlier in the morning, the Surat court has held Rahul Gandhi guilty in 2019 criminal defamation case and had awarded him 2 years of imprisonment. Later, it suspended its decision for 30 days and  gave time to Rahul Gandhi to challenge the verdict in High Court.

Defamation case against Rahul Gandhi

In 2019, Rahul Gandhi has made remarks in which he had said that "how come all the thieves have Modi as the common name?" Post which Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi had filed a complaint against Rahul Gandhi and a defamation case claiming that he is deliberately trying to defame the Modi community.
