Mumbai : Tata Group chairman, Ratan Tata, passed away at the age of 86 after a long illness. He had been in the hospital due to age related health issues.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, calling Tata a visionary leader, a compassionate person, and an extraordinary human being.

"Shri Ratan Tata Ji was a visionary business leader and a compassionate soul. He gave strong leadership to one of India’s oldest and most respected business groups. His impact went beyond business, as he was known for his kindness, humility, and dedication to improving society," PM Modi said in a message on X.

From 1991 to 2012, Ratan Tata lead Tata Group and took it to excel heights. In 1996, he started Tata Teleservices, the group’s telecom company. In 2012, he stepped down and continued to hold the honorary title of chairman emeritus for several Tata companies, including Tata Sons, Tata Motors, Tata Steel, and Tata Chemicals.

Tata Group today boasts a staggering revenue of $165 billion, but back in 1991, when Ratan Tata took the helm, the picture was far less impressive with $4 billion in annual turnover.

Maharashtra Chief Minister has announced a state funeral for Ratan Tata. The mortal remains of Ratan N Tata will be available for public viewing at the NCPA Lawns in Nariman Point, Mumbai, on Thursday, October 10, 2024, starting at 10:30 AM.

Reliance India Chairman Mukesh Ambani gave a heartfelt condolence to Mr. Ratan Tata. "It is a very sad day for India and India Inc.Ratan Tata's passing away is a big loss, not just to the Tata Group, but to every Indian. At a personal level, the passing of Ratan Tata has filled me with immense grief as I lost a dear friend. Each of my numerous interactions with him left me inspired and energised and enhanced my respect for the nobility of his character and the fine human values he embodied. Ratan Tata was a visionary industrialist and a philanthropist, who always strove for society's greater good. With the demise of Mr Ratan Tata, India has lost one of her most illustrious and kind-hearted sons. Mr Tata took India to the world and brought the best of the world to Bharat. He institutionalised the House of Tata and made it an international enterprise growing the Tata group over 70 times since the time he took over as Chairman in 1991. On behalf of Reliance, Nita and the Ambani family, I send my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved members of the Tata family and the entire Tata Group. Ratan, you will always remain in my heart. Om Shanti," he said.
