SC pulls up banks, telecos, asks them to avoid panic on Aadhaar linking

New Delhi : The Supreme Court on Friday asked banks and telecos to inform the users about linking of Aadhaar card with the concerned account within time limits to avoid last minute panic situation.

The apex court directed companies to alert subscribers about last date about the last date to link their accounts and mobile phones with Aadhaar.

The deadline to link Aadhaar card has been extended till March 31, while for mobile phone operators it has been kept as February 6. As per latest notification by the government, it is mandatory for all citizens to provide an Aadhaar card for opening a bank account.

“However, this date may be extended up to March 31, 2018. Therefore, until March 31, 2018, existing bank accounts will not be made non-operational for not linking with Aadhaar,” the government said in a counter-affidavit running into 1,163 pages. “No coercive action will be taken qua their bank accounts till March 31, 2018… But as far as opening of new accounts are concerned, Aadhaar or enrolment ID must be given as proof of identity.”
