Sinking Chennai receives 74% of northeast monsoon rains in 8 days, 12 dead

Chennai : Continuous heavy rainfall in Chennai has thrown life out of the gear. The city has received almost 74 per cent of the northeast monsoon in just eight days, killing at least 12 people.

By 8:30 am on Friday, approximately 8 days, Chennai has already recorded 554.2mm of rainfall this year, which is equivalent to 74% of the long-term average of 750mm it receives annually in the rainy season, which the IMD calculates between October 1 and December 15.

The rainfall on Thursday was Chennai's third-highest in the history in a single day in November month.

School holidays have been declared in the city after many parts remain flooded with water. Most districts have recorded more than average rainfall for the season so far, the Met office said.

The Chennai government had to face the heat as many blamed poor drainage system as the reason behind flooding in the city.
