Stampede in Bihar's Begusarai kills 3 pilgrims, Nitish Kumar announces ex-gratia of 4 lakh

Begusarai : Three pilgrims have been reportedly killed and over a dozen are injured in a stampede on the banks of Ganga river in Bihar’s Begusarai district, an official said.

The incident has been reported from Simaria ghat where people had gathered to take holy dip on the occasion of Kartik Purnima.

The identity of the deceased was yet to be ascertained. Sources said the death toll might go up. The wounded have been rushed to hospitals for treatment.

The cause of stampede has been learned as a false rumour that created a panic-like situation among the pilgrims.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, on the other hand, has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh to the family members of the deceased. He also announced free medical assistance to those who have been injured in the incident.

Begusarai SP Aditya Kumar said the three women died due to suffocation in the huge crowd while they were moving towards the ghat.

"The deceased were of very old age and perhaps died due to suffocation amid the huge crowd," the SP said.
