New Delhi : Congress interim chief Sonia Gandhi has asked her party to find a replacement. Her decision was read out during the crucial meeting of Congress Working Committee after a letter written by 26 top leaders calling for "a full-time, visible leadership" emerged.

Soon after Congress leader KC Venugopal read out Sonia Gandhi's reaction, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh requested her to continue.

Sonia Gandhi, speaking after Mr Venugopal, reiterated her decision and asked the party to begin deliberations to set in place a process to find her replacement. Earlier, she had told her aides that she will be quitting from the post.

According to sources mentioned by NDTV, she has asked the party to choose for a non-Gandhi candidate.

The "uncertainty" over the leadership and the "drift" in the party has demoralised workers and weakened the party, said the letter signed by senior leaders like Kapil Sibal, Shashi Tharoor, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Prithviraj Chavan, Vivek Tankha and Anand Sharma. The letter stressed that the Gandhis will always be an integral part of a "collective leadership" - a significant statement against the Congress's number 1 family.
