Will never forget chai with PM Modi, it was paid via UPI: President Macron

New Delhi : French President Emmanuel Macron was impressed by India's innovative digital payment system, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), during his recent visit to Jaipur. While enjoying a cup of chai with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Macron got to experience the convenience and efficiency of UPI in action as it was used to settle the bill at a humble street stall.

Impressed by this seamless experience, Macron remarked in his speech at the official banquet hosted by President Droupadi Murmu that he would "not forget" the chai shared with Modi.

Emannuel Macron was in India on two day visit and the chief guest of this year's Republic Day parade.

"I will always remember the tea we enjoyed near the palace (Hawa Mahal). The payment for the tea was made through UPI. It beautifully captures the essence of what makes this friendship special—the warmth of our connection, blending celebration, tradition, and innovation. This is the vision we aspire to share together," said Macron.

PM Narendra Modi demonstrated the UPI payment process to Macron, who was astonished to see the shopkeeper promptly confirming the payment.

The UPI system links several bank accounts into a unified mobile application, enabling users to utilize a range of banking functionalities, conduct seamless fund transfers, and make payments to merchants. Additionally, it streamlines peer-to-peer collect requests, offering the flexibility to schedule and fulfill payments at one's convenience.
